Instilling Good Reading Habits in Your Child
The sooner you can get your child interested in reading, the better. When it’s time for your child to start preschool, and then elementary school, they’ll need to know how to read. As the years pass by, more and more will be expected out of your child in their reading class.
It’s also essential to teach good reading habits to children, so they can function with ease in the real world.
Reading surrounds us in many different ways, and you can help develop a reading habit in your child, but it certainly isn’t easy. Here, we discuss how to instill good reading habits in your children.
Make it a Habit for Everyone
Remember that time when your child saw you putting on your shoes, so they then tried to do the same? Make reading a habit for everyone in the family, and your child will want to read as well.
If you’re seen reading on a daily basis, then it’ll become normal to them.
Provide Fun and Interesting Books
What things are your child interested in? Find books with subjects your child will love. Then, make these books available at all times.
Place a bookshelf in their room with all their favorite books and stories. You can even add new books in there from time to time. Let them decide what they want to read.
Even if the grade level on the book is lower than where they should be, it’s important to let them enjoy reading, and this means allowing them to decide.
Create a Comforting Reading Space
Next to their bookshelf, create a comfy and cozy reading space for them to hang out in. Once they grab their book, they can then plop down on the floor and begin to read. You can put down a furry rug, a bean bag chair, a small rocking chair, a few stuffed animals, or all the above.
Transform the space into something you know they’ll love and enjoy spending time in. This will convince them to read more often.
Go on Adventures to the Library
Taking fun trips to the library can be an adventure when you make it special. With each visit to the library, get your child excited by being excited yourself. Allow them to pick out a few books and pick out one for them as well.
Some libraries even have bookstores inside where you can give your child a few dollars to spend on a book or two to buy, which is always exciting.
Incorporate Reading into Everyday Activities
Reading doesn’t have to always take place in school, the library, or in their reading space at home. Reading happens all around us at all times. Look around and see how you can incorporate reading into everyday activities.
For example, read together while shopping, cooking, or driving in the car.
